The photograph, part of a series documenting the aftermath of the war, was taken by the firm Levy & Cohen, located at the northwest corner of Ninth and Filbert Streets, Philadelphia. The image shows the 'Burnt District' of Richmond. Levy & Cohen, a partnership of two Jewish photographers, toured Richmond in the summer of 1865 and captured at least 33 different views of the city. This particular photograph is exceptionally rare, with only a limited number of surviving examples. Published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, approximately 1865.
