A note in history...1895: It was reported today that the Hebrew Orphan Asylum is providing housing for 700 children at its building at 137th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Trustees Theodore Seligman, Edward Lauterbach and Emanuel Leyman are considering a proposal to raise $250,000 to expand the facility in order to meet increased demand for its services. Jesse Seligman (1827–1894) was the fourth oldest brother. In 1850, during the California Gold Rush, Jesse moved to San Francisco to open a highly lucrative luxury goods store in the city's only brick building at the time (which miraculously survived the devastating San Francisco fire of 1851). When Joseph passed away in 1880, Jesse took over as the head senior partner of J. & W. Seligman & Co., successfully running the powerhouse investment firm for the next 14 years
