Subject: Synagogues -- Maryland -- Baltimore

Pamphlet containing the Charter and By-Laws of the Har Sinai Congregation. Published in Baltimore, Maryland on February 1, 1885. This pamphlet details the organizational structure and regulations of the congregation.

This two-page letter constitutes a halachic inquiry from Isaac Moses Slatky, reader at the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, to R. Solomon Eger of Posen, Germany. The inquiry references Eger's ruling prohibiting Kohanim from leading congregational blessings on holidays or receiving the first aliyah. The letter also includes a description of the Baltimore community, its synagogue, and its kosher mikva. The verso contains a letter from R. Samuel Fogelsdorf of Posen concerning the halachic inquiry and personal matters. It bears the scrawled signature of Yitzchak Chaim, who claims to have been a former student of Eger. Dated January 1, 1845.

Handwritten letter book documenting the correspondence of Samuel Etting (1796-1862) with rabbis and Jewish figures from various countries between 1857 and 1858. Etting sought support for the establishment of the Beit Yisrael Sefardi congregation in Baltimore. The letters include copies of correspondence sent to Sir Moses Montefiore and Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild. The book contains nine written leaves with approximately twenty letters. Accompanying the letter book are eight additional handwritten letters sent to Etting and Solomon Nunes Carvalho in 1858, from rabbis in England, France, and the Caribbean Islands, concerning honorary memberships in the Baltimore Sephardic community. The materials show the attempts to establish a Sephardic synagogue in Baltimore and its ultimate failure. The letter book measures 30.5 cm and is in good condition, with some tears to the margins and stains. The additional eight letters show folding marks and minor damages.

Set of eight silver spoons, six soup spoons and two teaspoons, each engraved "Prs. (presented) to T. S.(?) by the Prest. (President) & Board of Balto. (Baltimore) FPHE (Fells Point Hebrew Friendship) Cong. Feb 12, 1871." The spoons were presented by the Fells Point Hebrew Friendship Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland on February 12, 1871. The Fells Point Hebrew Friendship Congregation, founded in 1832 and disbanded in 1899, was the second synagogue in Baltimore.
