Soup Spoon by Thomas Cohen (active 1808-1817)Soup Spoon by Thomas Cohen (active 1808-1817)

Silver soup spoon made by Thomas Cohen, a silversmith and watchmaker active in Lynchburg, Virginia (1808-1809), and Chillicothe, Ohio (1814-1817). The spoon is hallmarked "T. Cohen" and engraved with "J. & M.V." It's noted that Thomas Cohen's father, Jacob Cohen, was also a silversmith, and that Thomas's Christian name suggests a mixed-faith family, possibly with a non-Jewish mother. The spoon dates from this period of Cohen's career.
