Billhead - 12/1/1875... Sands Brothers Dry Goods store at 48 Main Street, Helena, Montana was operated by two brothers M. Sands and Abraham Sands. J. Sands did the purchasing as a resident in NYC. The elder Sands brothers, Abraham and Julius, remained the only partners in the Helena store until 1880 when Morris acquired a partnership interest in the firm. During the gold strike era and late 1800s, Jewish entrepreneurs dominated the local commerce. In 1867, Jewish merchants operated 17 out of Helena's 20 dry goods stores. Sands Brothers was one of the few elite mercantile houses that grew, expanded, and survived major town fires through the late 1870s and 1880s. Abram Sands was highly respected in both the Jewish and gentile communities. In 1881, he was elected President of the Helena Board of Trade. M. Sands, of the firm of Sands Brothers, Helena, and resident member and manager of the business, is a native of Poland; came to this country in his youth and for a time resided in N. Y. city, where he became interested in business with his brothers. Their present business at Helena was first established in Bannack in the year 1866 and there continued until 1867, at which time they moved to Helena, being now the oldest exclusive dry goods house now doing business in the territory. They carry an immense stock of dry goods. The firm is also largely interested in live stock throughout the territory. A. Sands, of the above firm, resides at Denver, Col., and is president of the Denver Brewing Co.'s Association. J. Sands is the purchasing partner, and a resident of New York city. Morris Sands was vice-president of the James R. Keene Mining and Milling Company and treasurer of the Alpha and Omega Milling and Mining Company. By the late 1870s, Sands Brothers was one of Helena's largest and most prosperous wholesale and retail stores. With brother Julius living full-time in New York, Abraham and Morris Sands managed the Helena store. Home of Peace Cemetery is adjacent to Capital High School and across Custer Ave from the Lewis & Clark Fairgrounds. The front of the cemetery faces west with a back gate on the east. The front entrance has three stone arches, with the center arch being the largest. On the center arch is inscribed "Home of Peace 1908". The smaller south arch says, "Erected by Morris Sands as a memorial to the sacred memory of his beloved wife, Lizzie who departed this life Jan 9, 1907."
