Subject: Montefiore, Moses, Sir, 1784-1884

A three-page letter written circa 1870 by Sir Moses Montefiore in Hebrew. The letter, written on stationery with the heading “Holy Land...Sir Moses Montefiore,” details various expenditures. The letter was written in Palestine and is in Montefiore's hand. Montefiore's philanthropic endeavors focused heavily on the Holy Land, where he traveled seven times between 1827 and 1875, funding projects related to industry, education, and health. His contributions include the Moses Montefiore Windmill in Yemin Moshe, the first Jewish neighborhood built outside the Old City walls, funded by the estate of Judah Touro.

Letter to Mayer Sulzberger, written on The American Hebrew letterhead, concerning plans to publish full accounts of the Montefiore celebrations in New York and Philadelphia. The writer requests permission to print Sulzberger's oration in full. Dated October 11, 1884.

Two volumes of The Jewish Chronicle, bound in one, covering the years 1844-1845. Published in London, England. The publication, which began in November 1841 and initially ceased publication in May 1842, relaunched with this new series. The volumes comprise 248 pages and 228 pages, respectively. One issue (Vol. 1, No. 28, 6 October 1845) is missing. The first page shows signs of wear and wrinkling. The binding is a later addition of cloth over boards with a leather spine. The book is 29cm tall. The publication provides insights into Anglo-Jewry in the early Victorian period, including reviews (such as a review of Lady Montefiore's cookbook), accounts of Sir Moses Montefiore's activities (including his work aiding Russian Jews), coverage of the installation of Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler, and analyses of Tsar Nicholas I's policies towards Jews.
