Hart's *History of the Mississippi Valley* offers an account of French discovery and colonization west of the Alleghenies up to 1748, concluding with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. It expands slightly on the content of the 1852 St. Louis first edition. Adolphus M. Hart was a prominent lawyer, son of Ezekiel Hart, and father of Gerald E. Hart, author of *The Fall of New France*.
