The complaint alleges that the Central Pacific Railroad, through its directors Stanford, Huntington, and Hopkins, illegally purchased the capital stock of the California Pacific Railroad Company and then refused to pay interest due on bonds issued by that company in an effort to bankrupt it. The document is accompanied by a small broadside (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") titled "HUNTINGTON TRIES TO TAMPER WITH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS," dated May 2, 1876, containing an extract from a letter signed C.P.
