The broadside lists varying amounts and notes an office in Baltimore. Jacob I. Cohen, Jr. & Brothers, who operated the lottery, are described as representing the House of Rothschild in the USA. The broadside shows some wear and toning. The lottery was operated by Jacob I. Cohen, Jr., who acted as principal agent for the contractors. Jacob I. Cohen, Jr. (1789-1869) was born into a Jewish family originally from Oberdorf, Bavaria, which settled in America in the latter part of the 18th century. He founded the banking house of J. I. Cohen, Jr., & Brothers and was identified with the struggle for political rights for Jews in Maryland from 1818-1826. He was involved with numerous other organizations and businesses. The broadside was sent to Samuel Hannah, Postmaster of Rough Creek Church, Virginia.
