Letter from Raphael J. De Cordova to Sabato Morais discussing Morais' input on Jews in Italy and his upcoming lecture on the massacre of Jews in Syria. Written in New York and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 3, 1860.

A fragmented letter of support for Rabbi Yaakov ben R. Shmuel Kimchi of Constantine, a Rabbinical Emissary from Eretz Yisrael. The letter includes signatures of rabbis from Tunisia (1775) and Italy (1777). Tunisian signatories include Rabbi Yosef Cohen, Rabbi Shlomo Alfasi, Rabbi Yosef Zarka, Rabbi Nassan Burgil, Rabbi David Margi, and Rabbi Nissim Shmuel ben Rabbi Meyuchas. Italian signatories include Rabbi Massud Bunan (Venice, signed as ‘Shliach Tzefas’), Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bassan (Reggio), Rabbi Simcha ben Avraham Kalimani, Rabbi Avraham ben Rabb Yitzchak Paccifico, Rabbi Matisyahu ben Moshe Katz (Revigo), Rabbi David ben Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen (Modena), Rabbi Moshe Nachman ben Yedidya Shlomo MeRikanti, Rav Yedidya ben Refael Shlomo Segal (Sienna), and Rabbi Moshe ben Eliyahu Foa. An additional, undeciphered Italian rabbinical signature is also present. The document, measuring 22.5 x 31 cm, is incomplete and was originally torn into two sections.

This is a first edition of a play, published in 1860 by Bloch Israelite Office in Cincinnati, Ohio, that dramatizes the infamous Mortara Affair. The Mortara Affair involved the abduction of a six-year-old Jewish boy, Edgardo Mortara, by Papal authorities in 1858 because he had been secretly baptized as a Catholic infant. The play explores the religious and political ramifications of this event, which sparked international outrage and protests. The bookplate of the Hamilton Hebrew Sabbath School is present in this copy.
