VA. ..notes warehouses in Pittsburgh, Pa., Lawrenceburg, Ky. & Augusta County, Virginia. Commercial content. Established in the late 1870s, S. Strauss & Co. operated out of Charleston, W.Va., specializing as wholesale dealers in Bourbon and Rye Whiskies, and serving as agents for steamed bottled lager beer and ale. Samuel Strauss raised his family in this tight-knit community before moving to Virginia later in life. His son, Lewis Strauss, heavily carried these early communal values into global Jewish relief efforts, working extensively with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to rescue and provide food aid to thousands of displaced Jewish refugees in Europe following World War I. Samuel S. Strauss's son... Lewis Lichtenstein Strauss (born in Charleston in 1896), who went on to become a highly influential Jewish-American businessman, philanthropist, naval admiral, and chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
