Trade Card for Sol. Strauss, Clothier


This trade card advertises Sol. Strauss, a clothier located at 28 East Third Street, Dayton, Ohio. The front of the card features an illustration of an Indian canoe, a teepee, and a bell-shaped element decorated with roses. The second trade card in the record contains a lengthy description of the KILO KODISH B'NAI JESHMEN Hebrew congregation of Dayton, Ohio. [The congregation was founded in 1850 and was originally called the Hebrew Congregation of Dayton. Their original meeting place was in what was once the old Dayton Bank on Main Street. Around 1864 they purchased a Baptist church on the corner of Fourth and Jefferson Streets, where they held their services. The congregation had no rabbi to begin with and a Mr. Wendell served as teacher. In 1874 the Rev. A. K. Fischer became their first rabbi. He was succeeded in 1880 by the Rev. G. Tanbenhouse. The congregation had a membership of over thirty in the 1880s. ] The back of the first trade card is blank. The back of the second trade card is blank.
