Pre-Civil War Token: John Ashby, Stock Broker


Token -This double-sided medallion token, struck in 1820's (Somewhere between the years 1824 and 1828)., advertises the services of Ashby & Young, a firm of stock brokers located at No. 3 Bartholomew Lane, Bank, in London. The obverse features a prominent engraved bull, symbolizing a bullish (rising) stock market ( the creatures on this token bear the faces of Nathan Mayer Rothschild and Moses Macatta, both powerful Jewish bankers in London at the time. Some consider this token as anti-Semitic , Friedenberg , on the other hand, believes it's a tribute to the financial genius of the English Jews. Standing above the firm's name and address: "ASHBY & YOUNG / STOCK BROKERS / No. 3 / BARTHOLOMEW LANE / BANK." The reverse side of the medallion displays a bear, representing a bearish (declining) market, positioned above a list of "FIXED HOLIDAYS" observed by the firm. ecorative scrollwork and the line "OFFICE HOURS FROM 10 TO 3" complete the design.
