Map of Middlesex County, Jamaica, 1756-1761

This map is one of three county maps of Jamaica, surveyed between 1756 and 1761 by Thomas Craskell and James Simpson under the direction of Henry Moore, Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. When combined with the other two maps, it forms a 90 x 38 inch map of the entire island. Dedicated to the Earl of Halifax, this section depicts Middlesex County and is notable for listing plantations owned by Jewish individuals. This is among the earliest detailed surveys of Jamaica, predating the Robertson map of 1804. The survey was commissioned to create a more comprehensive record of the island's geography than existed previously.
