The Cosmopolitan Hotel was established in 1870 by Samuel Schwab and Edward Zimmerman after they purchased and remodeled the insolvent Walla Walla Hotel. In 1883, they expanded the hotel, creating the first four-story building in Helena. Samuel Schwab was born in 1836 in Rimpar, Bavaria, and immigrated to the United States around 1853. Edward Zimmerman, born in 1836 in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, arrived in California in 1855.
