Receipt - Confederated States Quartermaster Receipt, No. 12. Printed and with manuscript additions, signed by HERMANN Hirsch as quartermaster. Payment of $1,218 for 58 cords wood (oak). Savannah, 5th October, 1864 Confederate Quartermaster Major Hirsch (1842-97) came under suspicion of engaging in business on his private account. Although charges were eventually dropped, Hirsch was reprimanded for "highly reprehensible" business speculations. It has been suggested that suspicions were directed his way due to the "usual prejudices in consequence of [Hirsch's] Jewish extraction."
