Envelope - An envelope signed by Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851), as "Free / J.R. Poinsett" in the postage section. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM 7. With a stamp reading "Free" and a black round datestamp postmarked in Washington, D.C. on December 29, [n.y.]. The addressee's name as "Doct. J.J. Cohen / Baltimore / Md" can be found written in a secretarial hand at the center. Bearing a large red wax seal verso. Expected wear including ink ghost impressions, scattered pencil inscriptions, and minor mounting traces verso, else near fine. The envelope measures 8.5" x 4." The slab measures 12.375" x 5.5." Joel Roberts Poinsett served as 15th U.S. Secretary of War during the Van Buren administration, between March 1837 and March 1841. Poinsett's correspondent may have been Joshua I. (alternately written as "J.") Cohen (1801-1870) of Baltimore, Maryland, a member of a prominent Jewish family. In addition to serving as the president of the medical and surgical faculties at the University of Maryland, Dr. Cohen was also a collector of Judaica.
