Letter - ISIDOR BUSH...Signed written to J. Hamburger on the Independent Order of Bnai Brith impressive letterhead stationary.....Bush, the Bnai Brith treasurer, discusses Lodge matters including visit of Grant Lodge: “Peace and harmony prevail in the district.”..St. Louis, MO, ...8th December 1880. Viennese born Isidor Bush (formerly Busch, 1822-98) was editor of the Kalender und Jahrbuch für Israeliten, but following the failed Revolution of 1848, emigrated to the United States. He developed the short-lived ‘Israel’s Herald, ’ the first Jewish weekly in America. Afterwards he removed to St. Louis where he was involved in Jewish communal life. Subsequently he made his fortune with vineyards on land he called Bushberg. He was an outspoken abolitionist, a "Union Man" at the Missouri Secession Convention and played an important role in keeping Missouri in the Union.
