Jacob Steinheimer Family Archive - NOTE NO ITEMS UNDER THIS ID ALL ARE SEPERATE.....Jacob Steinheimer and Estate Papers, Photographs, and other Effects Civil War Jewish Reconstructor.....From the estate of Jacob Steinheimer and his wife, Georgie Mayer-Steinheimer, a prominent Jewish family in Atlanta both before the Civil War and especially during Reconstruction, when they and their families are largely credited with restoring the Jewish faith and expanding the Jewish community during this period. Jacob Steinheimer is credited by Rabbi David Geffen, in his 2017 article, as having read the Torah to the congregation during Atlanta's first Rosh Hashanah in 1867....Information about Rosh Hashanah 1867 was gleaned from the writings of Janice Rothschild Blumberg and Hertzberg and the Atlanta Intelligencer newspaper…... Hertzberg writes that for the few years of its existence, "the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation adhered to the traditional ritual … service chanted entirely in Hebrew by knowledgeable members like Jacob Steinheimer, L.L. Levy and William Silverberg." The Hebrew Benevolent Congregation...., Mr. Jacob Steinheimer first officiating head. This lot contains a wide variety, and wide timeframe, of the Steinheimer's lives in Atlanta, Georgia. It includes multiple prayer books, letters from Europe in Yiddish, three speeches (?) in German by Jacob, a small Mezuzah w/sheepskin scroll, a log of births, deaths and marriages in the families, Jacob's 1891 certification of membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and other miscellaneous items including, wedding invitations and photos. Jacob's wife Georgia Meyer Steinheimer was the daughter of David Mayer, a leading citizen of Atlanta & one of the founders of the Atlanta Board of education...the Governor and ex-Governor were in attendance. As an interesting aside Jacob left Atlanta in 1860 (age 17...came to USA at age 14) for Michigan and returned in 1865.) ...this info was listed in his obituary.... NOT A BADGE OF SOUTHERN HONOR
