City Point, Virginia Born in Berlin, Army Surgeon Herrmann Loewenthal (1836-96) was married by a rabbi in 1866 and is buried in a Jewish cemetery. "According to the soldier's obituary, he "served as a Surgeon in the Prussian [A]rmy until 1863, when he came to" America. A furlough request for the soldier shows he was actually still a member of the Prussian Army when he came to America and enlisted in the US Army, and in January 1865, he requested a leave of absence from the US Army, to meet with the "Prussian minister" to get an extension on his leave from the Prussian Army."
