Leave of absence on Surgeon's certificate of disability. Grants Captain John Casner leave for 20 days. Issued at Division 5th Army Corp Hospital "by command of Major General Meade." Printed with manuscript additions…4th November, 1864. City Point, Virginia Born in Berlin, Army Surgeon Herrmann Loewenthal (1836-96) was married by a rabbi in 1866 and is buried in a Jewish cemetery. "According to the soldier's obituary, he "served as a Surgeon in the Prussian [A]rmy until 1863, when he came to" America. A furlough request for the soldier shows he was actually still a member of the Prussian Army when he came to America and enlisted in the US Army, and in January 1865, he requested a leave of absence from the US Army, to meet with the "Prussian minister" to get an extension on his leave from the Prussian Army."
