Letter and Envelope - Grilled 3c on ad cover for JNO. J. Levy, NY. Mfr. of Playing Cards. 1868...fine litho plus a business letter ordering card stock ...4/24/1868. This is a letter written and signed by Jno. J. Levy on April 24, 1868. Levy was a "manufacturer ofplaying cards" as shown on his envelope with its image ofhis building at 177 & 179 Grand St., New York. Levy's letter was addressed to Case Bros, (a paper manufacturing mill) in South Manchester, Conn. "We are informed by Messrs. Smith & Peters that you are going to make a Common Card Midder [?] at about 6 cents per lb. I want a few hundred reams 22 x 27. 40 lb at that price. Can you send me samples ofwhat you can do." The letter has a blind embossed impression from the S P Company in the upper left comer. (From “The World ofPlaying Cards”) The New York Consolidated Card Company was formed in 1871 by the merging ofthree earlier firms which had flourished during the mid-19th century. These were Lawrence & Cohen (which had been founded in 1832 by Lewis I. Cohen), Samuel Hart & Co (founded c.1849 by Samuel Hart) and John J. Levy. Levy was said to have been the youngest ofthese early manufacturers, having started his company in 1855 in New York City. In fact, we found ads from the Union Card Manufactory, 177 and 179 Grand Street, in 1851, owned by Huestis & Levy. The artwork is the same, but the building name is changed from "Heustis & Levy" to simply "Jno. J. Levy" as shown on the envelope.
