Manuscript - The document is dated November 25th, 1874 presented to Altamont DeCordova by the Cuban exiles/refugees/immigrants living in Kingston Jamaica at the time. The document conveys the gratitude the exiles/refugees/immigrants had towards Mr. DeCordova for the hospitality he had bestowed on them and the interest he had shown in the Cuba Libre (Ten Years War) cause. It also discusses the honor they felt that Mr. DeCordova had named his last born son (at the time) Varona Agramonte, after two illustrious Cuban Generals. The document is signed by approximately 30 Cuban exiles living in Jamaica at the bottom of the document. This document was presented to Mr. DeCordova on the day of the birth of Varona Agramonte DeCordova. Altamont DeCordova was a prominent Kingston Jewish Citizen and a key player in the Virginius Affair/Incident. He was the listed consignee of the Virginius at the time of its capture and was pivotal in sending dispatches to the proper diplomats/consuls to hasten any further executions. The framed document measures 18" wide X 25" high (in the original frame but the glass & paper backing have been replaced). The document is on a thick paperboard and is hand-designed/decorated in ink. To Altamont De Cordova Esq. The Cubans of this City have determined to wait upon you this day because you Sir have given them peculiar course to place the 25th November on their annals, as one of the bright and cheering incidents marking their hospitable reception in this noble Island, in which, for now Six Years past, they have found refuge from the tyranny, injustice, confiscation and death that drove them from their country. While others merit with yourself, all that grateful hear to can feel on tongues express, you Sir, carry out duty in this respect one step beyond rendering it difficult for hear to feel sufficiently, or for tongues to find language warm enough to speak the fervent gratitude we Cubans never can adequately award you as preeminently due to the action, feeling and ardent devotion you have tendered as well rendered to the cause of Cuba Libre. But when services so generously accorded to the Living you have identified yourself with our illustrious Dead, to giving to your last born Son the name Varona Agramonte, what more intimate connection can there be between yourself. your Family and ourselves? There can be no closer tie to bind Cubans and their future in the bond of (family?) you have chosen to intertwine and long as history shall dwell upon and reproduce the heroic names prefixed to your own Son, so long grateful Cuba have to bear in mind how much her children were indebted to his respected Father. Permit us, therefore on this his Natal Day to present you this emblem of the great cause that has illicited your sympathy and to wish Him, Your Family and Yourself, all that a good God can bestow upon mortality. Approximately 30 signatures of Cuban exiles/refugees/immigrants in Jamaica
