Pamphlet - Four Pages from a much larger Clothier and Hatter Periodical 1879, but miniature in size . Two full pages ads. The first is for M. Sampter & Sons...261 & 263 Canal Street, NYC...founded 1865. The 2nd is for (Julius) Hammerslough Brothers, Wholesale Clothiers....478, 480 & 482 Broadway, NYC. In 1885, M. Sampter & Sonsdonated $500 to the Hebrew Benevolent and Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York. The founder of Hammerslough Brothers, Julius and his brothers were pillars of the Jewish community. Julius, Edward and Louis, along with cousins Isidore and Simon. The parents of Julius, Edward and Louis were Solomon and Regina Benjamin Hammerschlag, German Jewish immigrants who settled in New York. The family surname was changed to Hammerslough after they arrived in the U.S. First store in Springfield & mfg uniforms for the Union Army. The Hammersloughs dissolved their Springfield business in February 1868 and moved to New York. (At one point, they were partners with the Saks brothers, Andrew and Samuel, whose business eventually became the luxury department store Saks Fifth Avenue.)
