Letter - Type written transcription of a letter by a researcher on a 3/21/1861 letter by Carvalho, S. N. to Rabbi Leeser....circa 1900s Touro—Hahner Ju L. Bk dec 7 Bk New Orleans, 28th March, 1861. My Dear Mr. Leeser: Your favor dated from 257 Lexington Str. Balto. came safely to hand. I hope you derived some benefit from your trip. My stay here has been prolonged by circumstances beyond my control. I hope to be at home by the middle of April, by which time my intention will be in successful operation here. I have been quietly practising (sic) my profession during the whole course of this great revolution, which has shaken the very foundations of the Union—All the time to a casual observer there has been no visible appearance of excitement. Some few parades of Volunteer troops—but without one obtained information from the public prints, he never would imagine so great a revolution, and pregnant as it is with so much either of good or evil, could have been conceived, matured and perfectly carried out, without the shedding of one single drop of blood. I believe the people of the South can and will maintain a separate government,—time will develop all things. Rev. Mr. Gutheim has elicited my warmest commendation for his continual endeavors to improve the religious conditions of our people in this city. He preaches every Sabbath to scarcely Minyan—and about 20 to 40 ladies—and his exhortations and teachings deserve much larger audiences. There is but little positive religion among the Israelites, although their practical efforts to farther charitable institutions is an evidence that they realize that the poor are a legacy left to their care. I took an active part in a Wedding performed by Mr. Gutheim at the "home". One of the girls was married, making I believe, the fourth from that useful establishment. All the old officers were re- elected last Sunday. I endeavored unsuccessfully to get subscribers to the Occident. Altho I have one order for a 25$ set of prayer books for Mr. I. Moses Abrahams. The name Mrs. Annie Abrahams is to be placed on the cover—please send them at your convenience. Your agent can collect, or Adams & C. can collect if you like. I hope you will not permit personal articles in the new form of the Occident. Make it a sort of eclectic, choice extracts from the best Jewish foreign publications, besides the editorials—and home information. Mrs. Aby & Lucien Bloch desire their kindest regards. I have not seen Mrs. Rosalie Jonas for three weeks. She has been confined to her chamber from indisposition. I am painting a large portrait of the late Judah Touro, full length with a view of the Touro Almshouse in the background. I am painting it on speculation. It is nearly finished. Make my kind regard to all friends. Tell David Solis from the most reliable source I have been informed that Mrs. Gaines has never made any claim to the property situated in the 4th district, the property known as the Poultney Claim, of which the Solis's own a part. Yours truly, (Signed) S. N. Carvalho.
