Carvalho's "new system of superheating steam, and producing the rapid transfer of heat at high temperatures by hot water circulation under pressure" was issued a patent in 1877. Charleston-born Solomon Nunes Carvalho is well known as a painter and a traveler. His scientific work is also of notice, especially in the area of steam engineering appliances.
