Emanuel Mittler was a prominent and influential leader within the early Jewish immigrant community of Youngstown, Ohio, dedicating himself heavily to local religious and civic development. His leadership was foundational to Jewish worship in the Mahoning Valley, serving as an original trustee of Youngstown's very first synagogue. Beyond congregational life, Mittler was a driving force in Jewish fraternal and charitable networks. On January 28, 1883, he helped organize twenty-five local Jewish men to formally establish Youngstown's first lodge of B'nai B'rith, an international Jewish service organization, and was elected as its very first president. Furthermore, he committed himself to community welfare by serving as a trustee for the Youngstown Hebrew Charity Society, which was founded in 1874 to manage vital relief funds and provide financial and social assistance to local Jewish families in need.
