Around 1864 they purchased a Baptist church on the corner of Fourth and Jefferson Streets, where they held their services. The congregation had no rabbi to begin with and a Mr. Wendell served as teacher. In 1874 the Rev. A. K. Fischer became their first rabbi. He was succeeded in 1880 by the Rev. G. Tanbenhouse.
